Saylers Creek and Appomattox Courthouse

Posted by – April 12, 2012

Well, I let these two dates slip by this past week. The first was April 6, 1865. This was the Battle of Saylers Creek in Virginia. This battle was when the Army of Northern Virginia had left the Richmond-Petersburg line and moved west towards the mountains. But, before the Army of Northern Virginia could escape, they were intercepted by Union forces east of Appomattox Courthouse at Saylers Creek on April 6, 1865. The end result was that the greater part of Cobb’s Legion was captured at the battle. For a capsule summary of the battle click here to go to the Wikipedia article on the battle.

The other date was April 9, 1865, which was the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. The following is a list of members of the Legion that surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia. The list may not be complete.

December 13, 1862 – Battle of Fredericksburg

Posted by – December 13, 2011

On December 13,1862, the Legion took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg at Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Legion was part of Thomas R. R. Cobbs brigade, McLaws division and Longstreet.s corps. The legion was located on Maryes Heights. Even though, McLaws division was in the midst of the battle, they were not heavily engaged. Brigadier General Cobb, who founded Cobbs Legion was mortally wounded and died within sight of the house where he was born. There were stories that he was killed by a confederate soldier, who had a grudge against General Cobb. You can read about the battle here at Wikipedia.

Confederate Veteran Grave Database

Today I received an email from Ken Mitchell, who is the administrator for the Confederate Veteran Grave Database, which is located at http://www.csagraves.com/ . He provided me information on Sheppard A. Jones, who was a member of B Company, Cavalry Battalion from the findagrave website.

Ken’s website currently has a database of over 8,000 Confederate soldiers buried in Georgia.

So, if you have a few minutes, go out and take a look at it.

Letters

Posted by – February 24, 2011

I have moved the letters from the old site to the Cobb’s Legion Wiki site.  The link is Letters from the Members. There are letters from both members of the cavalry battalion and the infantry battalion. There are two letters that mention the accidental death of Major Bagley from friendly fire. There are a number of letters from John William Wesley, who was from Lithonia, Georgia and was in C Company, Cobb’s Legion (Infantry). He was killed or mortally wounded during the Maryland Campaign of 1862.

I will be annotating the letters as a future project.

Laurel Grove Cemetery

Grave of James Nunis at Laurel Grove

On February 8, 2011, I was in Savannah, Georgia attending a job-related conference.  After the conference was over, I went to the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah to visit the Confederate Soldiers section.  There are over 300 graves of Confederate soldiers in the section, and throughout the cemetery are more graves, including the grave of Lafayette McLaws.  The Legion was assigned to McLaws’s division for most of the war.

Among the graves in the Confederate Section, are Georgia soldiers who were killed or died of their wounds at Gettysburg.  After the war, these soldiers were disinterred and reburied at Laurel Grove.  I found nine graves of members of the Legion.  They were: Thomas Houze (C Company, Cavalry), Nathan Pugh (I Company, Cavalry), Noah Strickland (C Company, Cavalry),  James Nuniz (E Company, Infantry), Ebenezer F. Smith (E Company, Cavalry), Cicero C. Brooks (H Company, Cavalry), John Weaver Cheeseboro (A Company, Cavalry), Thomas R. Barrett (H Company, Cavalry) and J. H. B. Nickles (Infantry Battalion).

I photographed the graves and placed the photographs on findagrave.com, and also in the photo gallery on this site.
